Does Insurance Cover Stem Cell Therapy?
Renovo operates on a self-pay model and does not bill U.S. health insurance. Coverage for stem cell therapy is uncommon in the United States, in part because no stem cell product is FDA-approved for orthopedic, spine, or neurological conditions. The first FDA-approved mesenchymal stromal cell therapy, approved in December 2024, is indicated for a specific transplant complication in children (U.S. Food and Drug Administration).

Is Stem Cell Therapy Safe? What the Research Shows
Safety data on mesenchymal stem cells is more mature than efficacy data. A 2020 systematic review of 55 randomized controlled trials involving 2,696 adults who received MSCs into the bloodstream found a higher rate of temporary fever, but no increase in infection, blood clots, death, or cancer (Thompson et al., EClinicalMedicine, 2020).
The size of the benefit is still being defined. For knee osteoarthritis, a 2025 Cochrane review of randomized trials concluded that stem cell injections may improve pain and function slightly compared with placebo injections, based on low-certainty evidence, and serious adverse events were reported infrequently (Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, 2025). Renovo shares both sides of this evidence with every candidate before a quote is finalized.
